Welcome to our Room 4 Blog
2011: Our Buddies
Our buddies are Year 6 students from Room 13. Their teacher, Stephen Gordon, brings our buddies down to our class every Friday at about 11AM. Our buddies support us on the mat during the introduction of the new Big Book. Afterwards they help us trace over some high-frequency words and then we draw and colour a picture together. We love to learn about what our buddies are doing in their class, so every now and then, Mr. Gordon, encourages them to bring something that they have worked on in Room 13, to share with us. We think that they are very clever, and we love them.
Ambury Farm
We went on the bus to Ambury farm as part of our topic studies. Room 4 watched the cows being milked and the sheep being shorn. We fed the hens and patted the calves.
Hosting Assembly
On Friday the 28th October Room 4 helped to host the school assembly with our buddy class Room 13 and Room 3. Our theme was Old MacDonalds farm. We wore the masks that we had made and sang some animal songs. It was such fun.
Library Time
Every week on Friday we go to the library. Mrs Sutherland helps us to choose books.
We enjoy our time looking through the lovely selection of books at Sunnybrae School.

2011: Fancy Feet Day
It was Fancy Feet day on Friday. Students were encouraged to walk to school, and it was a big success. Later, some senior students visited the classes and chose the best three fancy feet from each class. Isobel chose Carlos, Zara and James from our class. They went to the hall to have their photo taken, and they got a sticker and a tattoo as a prize. Well done to everyone who made their feet fancy.

2011: Book Week - The Grouchy Ladybug
We made our own story based on Eric Carle's book, "The Grouchy Ladybug".
2011: Book Week - Book Character Parade
To celebrate the end of Book Week, we got dressed up as our favourite character and had a book character parade. Have a look at our photo's:

2011: Book Week - How many books did we read?
Every time we read a book during book week, we filled in the details of the book in a fruit shape, and stuck the fruit shape to our fruit tree. At the end of the week, we all got a certificate for reading so many books during the week. Have a look at our photo's:

2011: Book Week - Read Around
Mrs. Naran and Mrs. Seath read a story to our class during "read around" this week. Here are a couple of photo's of Mrs. Seath reading her favourite story to our class:
2011: Book Week - Zara's Book
Zara brought her favourite book in to school one day during Book Week, to share with the class. It was a fascinating book, because the animals moved when you moved the page back and forth.
2011: Book Week - Mrs. Morley
Mrs. Morley brought some of her favourite books in from home, and she read a book to the class every day.
2011: Mimio - Morning Activity 1
We learnt to move our photo from the bottom to the green area, and then we learnt to click on the pen icon to write our names. It was a little tricky learning to write on the whiteboard with the interactive pen. Have a look at the end result:
2011: Mimio - Morning Activity 2
This is a different morning activity, and we managed it really nicely. Mrs. Pretorius showed us how to read the sentence, click on the for "yes" or click on the for "no". It is a great activity, because we get to check that we have done everything we need to do, before the 8.55AM bell. This is what it looks like:
2011: Wii Sports
The teachers set up the Wii Sports Games as a "choosing activity" at the end of the school day, and here is a video of a student being amazing at ten pin bowling:
2011: Easter Bunnies with our Buddies
In the last week of Term 1, we did a fun Easter Bunny craft activity with our Buddies. Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.
2011: Topic (Minibeasts)
We learnt that minibeasts do not have a spine.
Mrs. Pretorius prepared a puzzle reveal for each of the different types of minibeasts. Six of us had a turn to be the teacher. We chose other students to take off a numbered piece of the reveal puzzle, and each time a puzzle piece was removed, we tried to guess what the minibeast was. We had great fun discovering the six different types of minibeasts:
2011: Art - Our Caterpillar Segments
2011: Art - Our "Very Hungry Caterpillar"
We each made our own segment of the caterpillar, by layering the different shapes onto the base shape. We used a different technique of painting on each shape: sand painting, marble painting splattering, dragging, sponging and strokes.
Segments were made by the following students, from left to right: Latoya, Jean, DaVin, James, Chan-Paul, Kalaneti and Zara.
2011: Topic - Define Map (SOLO Taxonomy )
We added pictures to our Define Map today. Our focus was "invertebrates". We learnt that we must put all the creatures that do not have a back bone, in the "Relevant" area of the Define Map, and that we must put all the creatures that do have a back bone, in the "Not Relevant" area of the Define Map.

2011: Art - Our Butterflies
Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.
Look at the end result ... our beautiful butterflies have hatched out of their chrysalises, and are now hanging from the net in our classroom!
2011: Art - Our Moths
We used three different painting techniques with this art work. First we splattered the black backing sheet with white paint. This formed the stars in the night sky. Next we painted our moths using different shades of brown. Next, we painted a light beam, by dry brushing yellow in the corner. Next we painted the black vein lines on our moths. Look at our beautiful moths flying towards the light beam:
2011: Topic- Life Cycle of a Butterfly
We coloured in the four pictures to make a Life Cycle of a Butterfly spiral - the egg, the caterpillar, the chrysalis and the butterfly.

2011: Art - Bubble Printing
We are learning about Forces now (Push + Pull), so we practiced blowing/pushing air through straws. We put the other end of our straws into a bowl of soapy, coloured water, and this is the result:

2011: Topic - Mimio Activity (Buttefly vs Moth)
Mrs. Rennie-Younger made this mimio activity about butterflies and moths.
We had to move the pictures from the bottom to the correct box.
We had to think very carefully, because butterflies and moths are very similar.
